Successful Envy

We all enjoy our own success and strive for personal happiness and fulfilment, but what is it that has us constantly looking over our shoulder?
Envy is one of the least desirable traits of human nature yet it often sparks the strongest of emotions.
Loving thy neighbour isn’t exactly easy after months of collecting their mail as they frolic in Bora Bora, courtesy of a recent lottery win. It’s also impossible to stop and smell the roses if your best friend accidently reversed over the garden in their shiny, new SUV. Plus, the grass really is greener at the Country Club golf course where your boss has a lifetime membership and a private fleet of golf buggies.
On the surface, being envious appears to be an obsession with others, especially those who possess immense wealth, luck, beauty, popularity, wit and/or impossibly white teeth. But ultimately, the nature of envy is due to personal dissatisfaction with oneself.
It seems that being content with your individual success is the only cure to envy, aside from giving away all of your worldly possessions and moving into a small uninhabited cave. Hold on; I wonder if my cave would have a central heating like my cousin’s Hamptons holiday lodge?
