Valentine's Day or V Commerce?

Although Saint Valentine’s Day holds new commercial meaning in the present day, the holiday is an ancient tradition inaugurated by early Christian martyrs, medieval poets and urban legend.  It was noted Valentine’s Day was a 1382 poem written by legendary wordsmith Geoffrey Chaucer. The preoccupation with love in literature soon became a popularised movement and filtered down to the masses, in the form of early greeting cards – often handmade.

In the present day, the love letters and poetry remains, but Valentine’s Day has grown to include a catalogue of goods and services; from eternity rings to singing e-cards. Despite being widely celebrated as a holiday in many countries, there are still many who choose to avoid the holiday, on the grounds that it has turned into a commodification of love and affection.

Aside from adults giving other adults teddy bears, there’s nothing intrinsically wrong about dedicating a day to one of the happiest emotions in life. Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, but also supports the wider business community, as the floristry industry booms, couriers are run off their feet, restaurants book out and internet service providers supply a full inbox of V-Day greetings.

This increase in V-commerce has led to the holiday being less concerned with the religious tradition or Westernised culture of Valentine’s Day and more about one’s personal belief systems. The best part of Valentine’s Day might just be the freedom to make our own plans, from family dinners to marriage proposals or even singles parties – love in all its forms is truly treasured.
