Wool - The Best 'Suited' Fabric

Wed, 25 Aug 10

The suit is a statement in terms of its colour, style, and the way you accessorise it. The primary feature of a good suit is the fabric. It affects the overall look and feel of the garment and how it drapes on the body. There are two types of suits – wool and non-wool.....

While the obvious choice is premium wool, there are various suit fabric options including silk, linen and more commonly used polyester blends. The synthetic versions are usually mixed with wool.

At Shirt Studio, our new Made to Order suiting line is offered in mainly 100% wool with some options for a wool silk blend.

Wool is a natural and raw material that responds well when made up as a suit – it feels better, lasts longer and falls nicely on the wearer.

Why Wool?

The real luxury lies in the benefits to its wearer…wool is more suitable than any other fabric because the crimp in wool makes it easier to spin the fleece by helping the individual fibres attach to each other so that they stay together. Crimp corresponds to the fineness of the wool fibres – the higher the better. Merino wool may have up to 100 crimps per inch. There are many reasons to justify wool as the finest choice of suit fabric...

  • The process of qualifying good wool and the meticulous construction behind a wool-made product clearly explain the prestigiousness of the fibre.
  • It can be made it a variety of weaves and weights adjusted to achieve the preferred thickness and comfort. The tighter the weave the finer the wool causing less creasing and wrinkles.
  • Similar to cotton it breathes easily keeping you cool is summer and warm in winter. It holds dyes well so you won’t need to worry about premature fading.
  • Wool fibres readily absorb moister, so you won’t feel so sweaty in the warmer months.
  • Avoid your clothes clinging to your body and static-electric shock – wool is resistant to static electricity.
  • A thumbs up by the medical profession - wool is hypo allergenic.

Next time you’re considering a new suit purchase, choose wisely. A suit is an investment so look for high quality and value for money rather than lower price and a quick fix.

Shirt Studio offers a high end made to order suiting service with over 200 high-grade pure Merino wool fabrics to choose from, and a selection of patterned designs for lining. For more information about our suits go to www.shirtstudio.com.au
